The Art of Interactive Design
“The Art of Interactive Design” by Chris Crawford
(Chapter 1, What Exactly IS Interactivity?)
- Interactivity = listen + deeply ponder + respond
- There must be at least two “objects” to interact with each other
- Participation is going along with what is happening, but the other will not listen, ponder, or respond
- Reaction is acting on what the other does; there is no communication between both entities
- Interactive design is different from human factors engineering.
- “Good interactivity design integrates form with function”
(Chapter 2, Why Bother With Interactivity?)
- Interactivity has been happening in nature for ages
- Interactivity engages the human mind more than any other form
- “People identify more closely with [interactivity] because they are emotionally right in the middle of it
- The computer’s edge is not that it can do calculations, its that one can do them in fractions of a second and easily.
- Interactivity grabs us and keeps us entertained
- “I hear and I forget, I see and I remember; I do and I understand” – Chinese proverb
