“The Art of Interactive Design” by Chris Crawford

(Chapter 1, What Exactly IS Interactivity?)

  • Interactivity = listen + deeply ponder + respond
  • There must be at least two “objects” to interact with each other
  • Participation is going along with what is happening, but the other will not listen, ponder, or respond
  • Reaction is acting on what the other does; there is no communication between both entities
  • Interactive design is different from human factors engineering.
  • “Good interactivity design integrates form with function”

(Chapter 2, Why Bother With Interactivity?)

  • Interactivity has been happening in nature for ages
  • Interactivity engages the human mind more than any other form
  • “People identify more closely with [interactivity] because they are emotionally right in the middle of it
  • The computer’s edge is not that it can do calculations, its that one can do them in fractions of a second and easily.
  • Interactivity grabs us and keeps us entertained
  • “I hear and I forget, I see and I remember; I do and I understand” – Chinese proverb
