Comics – Week 3

The assignment was within 7 to 12 panels, to tell a story. The panels had to be digital collages.

Scott McCloud’s “Understanding Comics” did shine some light onto the subject of comics. What I gathered from McCloud was that a comic, which is a series of sequential art that allows the reader to make the connections, has to tell a story of some form.

Having come up with a story, we decided to make the comic a little more engaging. While the reader would not be able to associate with the characters, due to having images of actual people, we decided to allow the reader to make decisions for the characters. This would force the reader to connect with the comic and the character. The ‘gutter’ in our comic is the page loading to the next page, which contains the next panel. This new ‘gutter’ allows the characters to transport to a new scene. In McCloud’s pyramid, the comic would border on reality (due to actual images of people) and in the middle ground of language, not to abstract or full of great meaning.
