The User Illusions, Ch 6 “The Bandwidth of Consciousness” by Norretranders

- Humans do not notice the big picture.
- We get loaded with too much information and disregard most of it.
- “Consciousness does not consist of hot dogs but consists of hot dogs that have been apprehended. That is far less complex.”
-  The body sends over eleven million bits a second, but we, and our consciousness, experience way lower than that.
- Consciousness is like a spotlight, we can only focus on certain parts at certain times.
- Consciousness is agile, but it can still go blank.
- You only notice things as they become part of the past.
-  We linger with thoughts of the recently past.
- Miller’s rule: We can make a clear decision when presented with seven things, plus or minus two.
- Humans chunk information
- We can keep up to 2.8 bits of information in our heard.
- Symbols allow us to remember more things; “the trojan horse”
- Macrostates must allow microstates.
- It’s not about accounting loads of information, but exformation; information discarded on purpose.
- The more you go into detail, the more bits are taken up.
- Human like having the option of noticing  different parts of the same image.
- The ceiling for human processing is 50 bits/sec, either as input or output.
- Others say 16 bits/sec.
- Humans can do activities automatically without much thought, only if they learn them first.
- If humans where computers, we would be vast, processing hundreds of millions of bits per second.
- “We are all in a state of radical solitude”
- Children like repeated stories because they can relive it in their head.
- “Live concerts are not about music but about what the music does to people.”
- Schizophrenics take everything literally, word by word. They have trouble with exformation.
- It is easier to lie about something intellectually than emotionally.
- “Exformation is more important than information.”
- Humor is the weapon against vulgar information fascism.
- Ban concepts from talking about themselves, the “Liar Paradox”
- Information is a result of exformation.
- Television has over million bits/sec, radio more than 10,000 bits/sec, and text 25 bits/sec. It becomes harder to edit television than radio, which is harder than a text interview.
